Toyota Goes All-In on Hybrid: Corolla and Yaris Hatchbacks Ditch Petrol

T

oyota has announced its decision to exclusively manufacture hybrid versions of its iconic Corolla and Yaris hatchbacks. This bold step signifies a departure from traditional petrol-powered models, reflecting a growing shift towards eco-friendly and fuel-efficient alternatives.

Effective immediately, Toyota will cease production of petrol-powered variants of the Corolla and Yaris hatchbacks, making hybrid power the sole option for consumers. This decision comes amidst changing consumer preferences and a surge in demand for hybrid vehicles, driven by concerns over environmental sustainability and rising fuel costs.

For the first time since its inception in 1967, there will not be a petrol-powered variant available for either the Corolla or Yaris hatchback under $30,000. The entry-level price for the Yaris SX Hybrid starts at $30,190, while the Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid comes in at $32,110. While these prices may represent a premium compared to their petrol counterparts, Toyota is positioning itself as a leader in the transition towards greener mobility solutions.

Notably, the shift to hybrid power does not affect the high-performance GR variants of both models. The GR Yaris and GR Corolla will continue to be powered exclusively by turbocharged petrol engines, catering to enthusiasts who seek exhilarating performance without compromising on efficiency.

Toyota's decision to go all-in on hybrid technology reflects its commitment to sustainability and innovation. According to Toyota Australia's vice president of sales and marketing, the move is driven by changing consumer behavior and preferences, rather than external incentives or regulations.

"We've advised our dealers that from today, we are no longer accepting orders for petrol variants of Yaris hatch and Corolla hatch. This is due to natural consumer demand," stated the Toyota executive. "There are no direct incentives, and there's certainly no legislation. It's driven by changing consumer behavior – behavior and choices that Toyota has played a significant role in encouraging."

The discontinuation of petrol-powered variants includes the Ascent Sport, SX, and ZR grades of the Yaris hatchback, previously priced from $24,800, $28,190, and $31,260 respectively, before on-road costs. However, the Corolla sedan will continue to offer regular petrol models, starting with the Ascent Sport at $29,270 plus on-road costs.
